Northwestern University in Qatar invites applications from highly qualified candidates for a full-time Assistant or Associate rank faculty appointment in Social Psychology, to be appointed in the Liberal Arts Program.
We seek candidates with an active research program that focuses on social psychology in the Arab world, South Asia, and/or Africa. Preference will be given to scholars whose research is comparative or transnational, who investigate the effects of digital media, who explore questions of diversity, social justice, and/or multiculturalism, who include ethics, gender, race, and/or coloniality in their analysis, and who have linguistic competence and field experience in their research area. By the time of appointment, we expect successful candidates to have a Ph.D. in Psychology or in related interdisciplinary backgrounds. Candidates are expected to contribute to both undergraduate and graduate education and program development.
NU-Q is a globally embedded institution: it is one of three campuses of Northwestern University (Chicago, Doha, Evanston) and one of several institutions in the Qatar Foundation’s Education City in Doha, Qatar. Our mission is to mentor and educate students to become creative, ethical, and impactful communicators across cultural and national boundaries. We are committed to a vibrant student life, academic excellence, and to high-level undergraduate student research and media making, particularly on the Global South. Located at the confluence of continents, NU-Q is a diverse global community with approximately 500 students from 60 countries.
Candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to our distinctive Institute for Advanced Study in the Global South (#IAS_NUQ), a community of evidence-based storytellers devoted to understanding the media, cultures, societies, politics, and history of the countries of the Global South. This includes mentoring our Undergraduate Global Fellows, participating in reading and research groups, and contributing to panels, seminars, conferences, and publications.
In addition to a demonstrated publication track record or evidence of a highly promising trajectory commensurate with career stage and/or rank, applicants should show competence in working with globally diverse communities, a strong commitment to excellence in inclusive teaching and mentoring, and dedication to institutional service and shared governance. Responsibilities include teaching courses in the liberal arts program and elective courses that speak to their research field, as well as contributing to NU-Q’s curricular demands. These could include the required “Ways of Knowing” course, the Doha Seminar honors course, graduate seminars, executive education classes, or courses qualifying for our university’s growing number of interdisciplinary minors, such as Africana Studies, Film and Design, Middle East Studies, Media and Politics, and Strategic Communication.
NU-Q provides competitive compensation and benefits. The medium of instruction is English, but proficiency in Arabic or another regional language would be an advantage at NU-Q. Candidates with experience in US higher education as well as in the Arab region, women, and persons from traditionally underrepresented groups in academia are particularly encouraged to apply.
