Brief about the project
The current situation in Jordan is characterized by a continued decline of the available water resources. Climate change and population growth have an additional impact on the country’s severe water scarcity. Therefore, Jordan is a country with absolute water scarcity and is among the ten most water-short countries worldwide. The share of water used for agricultural irrigation is at about 60%. Through the influx of Syrian refugees, the demand for water increases constantly. The water authority is under high pressure – particularly in the North of Jordan, which received the majority of refugees – to fulfil its mandate of water provision. The majority of Jordanians are supplied only periodically through the public network with drinking water. Technical and administrative water losses are at about 50% (National Water Strategy 2023 – 2040).
On behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in cooperation with the Jordanian water sector institutions is implementing the Programme “Water Sector Governance” from 1/2023 – 12/2026. The programme objective aims at enhancing the implementation of the principles of good governance in the Jordanian water sector.
The programme comprises of 5 components, namely (1): sector information & dialogue, (2) performance monitoring and regulation, (3) bulk water management, (4) human resources management & leadership and (5) digitalisation & data security.
