As the official representation of Switzerland in Jordan, the Embassy represents the Swiss interests in the areas of political, economic and financial affairs, legal arrangements, science, education and culture as well as consular affairs. The Embassy serves as a hub for humanitarian aid and development cooperation in the region.

Communications Officer – 100 %

The Communications Officer of the Embassy promotes with passion the work of the Embassy and our partners to overall contribute to the positive image of Switzerland in Jordan and in the region. He/she is in charge of the external communication of the Embassy, which includes outreach to the public, relations with media representatives in Jordan, the social media channels of the Embassy and writing and editing texts or preparing visual communications. He/she is also responsible for the coordination and organization of cultural projects, public activities and events of the Embassy.

Duties & responsibilities

The Communications Officer is working under the overall supervision of the Head of Diplomatic Affairs. The list of tasks includes the following:

• Responsible for external communication

• Positioning Switzerland according to the Embassy’s Communication Strategy, ensuring clear and consistent communication regarding the strategic focus and activities of the Embassy
• Providing advice on strategic and innovative approaches, enhancing communication effectiveness
• Responsible for all social media communication (Instagram and Facebook)
• Monitoring media and social media and contributing to the Embassy’s context analysis for Jordan and the region
• Responsible for the Embassy’s media relations within Jordan; actively identifying media opportunities, including organizing projects, site visits, facilitating photo coverage, tv footage and interviews
• Producing communication material of the Embassy such as the Embassy newsletter, press releases, briefing notes (for example on cultural projects), project factsheets, speeches, branding material, etc.
• Coordinating with service providers (e.g., printers, designers, editors, marketing agencies, etc.)

• Organization and coordination of cultural and Presence Switzerland projects, activities and events
• Designing and implementation of communication tools and products for various stakeholders to report on Swiss cooperation programs and initiatives and to position Switzerland in the donor landscape in Jordan and abroad
• Translation / interpretation and monitoring of the Arabic language social media
• Assistance to the Head of Diplomatic Affairs (20%)

Academic education and experience

• M.A. in communication or related field such as journalism (or B.A. with additional two years of work experience)
• Academic education in politics or international relations is desirable
• Minimum 5 years of work experience in communication or related field such as journalism, including the proven professional engagement with social media
• Established media and communication network and ready-use photo database
• Experience with designing branding material and creating photo and video content
• Proven experience in drafting and designing communication materials such as press releases, posters, invitations, etc.
• Proven track record in communication campaign design and implementation in the field of public policy, private sector and/or international cooperation and/or humanitarian aid
• Proven knowledge and experience in project management
• Good knowledge of the Jordanian cultural landscape and interest in cultural matters
• Experience with an embassy or within an international work environment is an asset

Skills

• Strong interest in navigating between cultures and working in an Embassy
• Excellent command of English and Arabic (advanced written and oral skills, at least C1 level in both) with the ability to translate Arabic/English in both ways (oral/written)
• Knowledge of other languages, in particular French or German, is an asset
• Professional record in organisational use of social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, etc.)
• Proficiency in design, publishing software and MS Office
• Excellent presentation skills and capacity to speak in public
• Good analytical skills and high political awareness
• Works autonomously and shows creativity and flexibility
• Well-structured and well-organized, highly flexible with ability to work under pressure
• Strong interpersonal skills, team player and service orientation. Intercultural and interprofessional mindset.
• High degree of personal integrity and trustworthiness
• Availability to occasionally travel abroad, for instance to Switzerland
